To celebrate the 150th birthday of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian, (his) constructivism is our exhibition programme: The FVKS (Förderverein Kulturstadt Görlitz-Zgorzelec e.V.) has invited three artists to link Mondrian’s strict geometric forms with their respective own angle of vision. The series and individual exhibits thus pay tribute to his comprehensive oeuvre and also provide an insight into contemporary trends. And they do so primarily in virtual form. But “mondrian in new spaces” is (also) aimed at people on site; in workshops and presentations, those interested could artistically realise their own ideas about Piet Mondrian (1872 – 1944).

Colorful Stripes & Formation

Astrid presents works from her analogue painting series “Colorful Stripes” and “Formation”. In “Colorful Stripes” the – vertical and horizontal – coloured line is the main focus. Sometimes densely packed, sometimes minimalistically spread, this is applied colour by colour on the canvas and sometimes even runs beyond the edge of the picture. In “Formation”, the purity of the colour and the geometric form are decisive. Here, colour fields sharply border each other directly or are playfully applied to the picture surface. The exhibition is enriched by several digital works. These are based on photographs of her analogue originals, which Astrid subsequently processes digitally.

Polemic with Mondrian

Izabela’s paintings do not require a specific subject to understand the essence of her work. Her style is characterised by a clear, minimal aesthetic, bold linear forms and a careful balance of colour and texture. As part of the project “mondrian in new spaces”, the artist presents works created in the last three years (“Polemic with Mondrian” and others). The paintings evoke a certain contradiction, as at first glance the artwork appears neat and tidy, but due to the painting technique and the way the paint is applied, it is not necessarily what one might think at first glance. According to the artist, “every painting based on the sensitivity and emotions of its creator is unique and unrepeatable. It can affect, amaze or shock. However, it has a right to certain imperfections because, after all, it was created by human hands”.

The Ratio & Golden Light

On the occasion of Piet Mondrian’s 150th birthday, Marija has made a selection of artworks from her two series dealing with geometric abstraction – “The Ratio” and “Golden Light”. The artworks from “The Ratio” show an obvious resemblance to Mondrian, as they are strongly influenced by his earlier approaches: images are broken down into their basic elements, visual boundaries are drawn and broken. Through “trial and error”, Marija arrives at a harmony that recurs to the elements of order and balance. “The Ratio” gave rise to the second cycle of works, “Golden Light”: While dealing with associative abstraction in various interpretations, this is a reminiscence to Mondrian’s early shift away from traditional landscape painting.

Astrid Stoeppel is a German painter who prefers to create large-scale, abstract works in acrylic on canvas. Colour, form and geometry are always the main focus of her work. Her paintings have been shown at well-known art fairs in the USA as well as in galleries and at fairs in France, Great Britain, Italy, Belgium and Germany.

Astrid lives and works in southern Germany, and since 2022 also temporarily in her new studio in Italy, near Ancona. The works of the Weilheim-born artist can be found in numerous public and private collections in the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, South Korea and throughout Europe.

Connection to Mondrian:

Piet Mondrian used the line and colour fields as important pictorial means in his abstract paintings, as well as geometry and the purity of colour. All these elements have played a central role in Astrid Stoeppel’s works from the very beginning. With her abstract paintings, she also wants to distract from the increasingly complex environment, to make the viewer pay attention, and to reach them with pure colour and simple forms. Unlike Mondrian, the artist also uses many mixed colours and always combines them freely and spontaneously.

Polemic with Mondrian

Izabela Zak is from Zielona Góra (Poland), where she also lives and works. In her paintings, she is inspired by everything from the proverbial hole in the bridge to beautiful landscapes. She applies acrylics on canvas at the easel with brush, palette knife, hand or paint roller, also using dripping and action painting techniques. Izabela creates realistic as well as semi-realistic and abstract paintings.

Izabela obtained a Master’s degree in painting from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Zielona Góra. As part of her studies, she continued her education at the College of Art and Design in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. She has participated in many plein air painting workshops in Poland and abroad. Her artistic work includes 40 solo exhibitions and more than 40 group exhibitions in Poland, Germany, France and Portugal. For her painting “Calligraphy Lesson”, the artist received the Silver Prize at the Camelback Gallery International Painting Competition in 2021. Her works are held within private collections in Poland, France, Germany, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United States.

Connection to Mondrian:

The ‘Polemic with Mondrian’ series is a kind of variation on the works of Piet Mondrian with a contemporary twist. The artist came up with the idea of combining new motifs with Mondrian’s patterns and developed this new series of ecstatically coloured paintings. The final results are impressive works of art inspired by the simplicity of the primary colours black and white, yet with a reassuring originality. An ambivalent homage that combines tradition and modernity.

Marija Nikolić is a visual artist of the younger generation. Her current artistic expression is deeply rooted in the aesthetic thinking of abstract minimalism and postminimalism, often exploring the capabilities of a framed geometric form.

After graduating from the Tehnoart Beograd School of Art, Jewellery Department, Marija enrolled at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Belgrade, where she completed her Master’s degree in painting (2015). Subsequently, she participated in a number of group exhibitions, had several solo showings and participated in a few art colonies. Her works are part of in many private and some public collections. Marija is currently represented by ZContemporary, an abstract art gallery based in Hamburg, Germany. She lives and works in Belgrade, Serbia.

Connection to Mondrian:

Marija addresses central questions of art, similar to what Mondrian and numerous other artists do: What is a painting ? What are the building blocks of a painting ? How to achieve a balance between line, form and colour ? While Mondrian ultimately reduces the artwork to primary colours, black lines and white surfaces, the artist tries to preserve the effect of a brushstroke, imperfect colouring and handmade straight lines. In this way, she maintains the “human spirit” behind the artwork and ultimately emphasises it as the meditative product of an artist trying to bring order, balance and organisation not only to this two-dimensional surface but also to her artistic expression.
